“You only need to change two things. What you do, and how you do it.”
– Steve Heston, on course correction
Hey, it’s only the third time in 10 years that I’ve quoted myself…
If we’re not getting the results we want, there are two places we need to look, if we’re believers in cause-and-effect thinking.
First, we need to ask ourselves if were doing — or trying to do — the right thing. Second, we need to ask if we’re doing whatever it is the right way.
Yes, The Heston Group’s slogan is “The right thing, the right way at the right time,” but for now, let’s focus on the things more within our sphere of influence; the what, and the how.
If your activity level is frenetic, maybe a slower pace is called for. If your results are out of synch with your efforts, maybe a different approach is called for.
Ultimately, we’re measured on what we accomplish — and that makes it very easy to get completely focused on “right now.” Context counts, however, and right now was created by what came before and it’s merely a lifting-off-point for what comes next. And, when we look to what we will / should / can do next, if we’re seeking change in accomplishments, in outcomes, we ought to first look at these two things when we consider that change.
