“Well I’m not the kind to live in the past, The years run too short and the days too fast
The things you lean on are the things that don’t last, Well it’s just now and then my line gets cast into these
Time passages…”
– Lyric from 1978 Top Ten Hit Record, “Time Passages” by Al Stewart
The Youngest of The Three Who Will Not Be Tamed turns 10 on Wednesday.
Yikes. Where does the time go?
So, I’m not the kind to live in the past. And, as Dad often reminded me, the years do run short, especially as we put more of them behind us.
Feeling a little melancholy as the day approaches and 937 miles separate us — for now — I thought of this old song, and it reminded me that the things we tend to lean on really are, too often, the things that don’t last. And that means that we ought to lean on are the things that do. The love of a child. The lessons from a parent. The embrace of a spouse. The kindness of a stranger, or the kindness extended one.
Then, when the times come up that our line gets cast — we’re casting it where the fish are biting — and where our time passages are accompanied by a smile.
