“They say such nice things about people at funerals that it makes me sad I am going to miss mine by just a few days.”
– Garrison Keillor, NPR humorist and acclaimed author
Ever played The Tombstone Game at a leadership retreat? You know, when the facilitator asks, “What is it, at the end of your career, that you’d want written on your tombstone?”
Let’s hope it’s not just about our career.
I’ve always been confused by people who say they “separate their work life from their home life.” That must be utterly exhausting.
“I’m a completely different person away from the office…” is another one I hear a lot and just. Don’t. Get.
The Tombstone Test, though, is worth considering. If we can come up with a way we’d like to be remembered — and then have it rule our every thought at work, at home and in between, I bet we’ll be remembered as difference makers.
