“What’s gonna work? Teamwork!”
– Lyric from the Teamwork song on “Wonder Pets“
Ok, look. Gimme a break. It’s that week, ok?
A couple hours ago (it’s Wednesday night as I write this post) I watched a supremely talented group of high school kids play selfless basketball. When the starters left the game the margin was 34 points. The final margin was 20 and the opponent left their starters in for five minutes after our starters became spectators. It was a case of absolute domination. By a team.
It’s a great indication of what the Wonder Pets taught our kids when they were little.
The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.
“Joe is much better at medical Clients than I am, I should introduce him to Dr. Jones,” says the sales pro who “gets” teamwork.
“Sue is an amazing presenter,” says the coach / leader who understands that territory boundaries play second fiddle to common sense.
Our high school basketball team features the two best players in the state, and last night, they completely deferred to the next five or six guys on the team, much to the terror of every other team in our class in the state. By the way, no one left without realizing “those two studs made their teammates better tonight.” It’s a great case of 1 + 1 = much more than two…
Because, “what’s gonna work? Teamwork! What’s gonna work? TEAMWORK!”
It’s a concept that doesn’t just play out with kids in an arena. It makes all the sense in the world when it comes down to business, and the best leaders find a way to draw it out of their teams, too.
