“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”
– Peter Drucker, Austrian born American management expert
Leave it to Drucker to suck all the romance out of a sunset-themed DD…
Late last week, we considered the possibilities that arise each day with the sun. So, too, does the sun’s setting provide a perfect backdrop for reflecting. Not the doe-eyed reflecting and thinking of what could have been, but the kind where one soaks in the beauty of the day’s end, and considers what was.
Too often, we rush to what’s next — and I’m a big proponent of focusing on what’s next — but not at the expense of understanding what just happened.
Buckingham calls it “context.” Using what we’ve experienced to better execute in the next round.
Just as my offices face east, the decks on the back of the new Casa face west — and they provide a spectacular view of the Texas Hill Country sunset. The colors, different each night, yet as spectacular as the night before, are almost mesmerizing in their allure. Once the unpacking is done, and the thermometer registers a more reasonable reading as night falls, I look forward to a quiet seat, a single-barrel-on-ice, and a peaceful moment or two reflecting on what was in that day.
And, I look forward to the next day’s sunrise, it’s possibilities enhanced by the prior nights reflection.
