“Instantaneous worldwide communication might be able to help us mitigate the negativity and soften the viciousness of the next twenty years. But you must have the courage to speak up.”
- Michael R. Drew, co-author of Pendulum and Neuroscientist at the Center for Learning and Memory, University of Texas at Austin
Look, I TOLD you it wasn’t an easy read, so if you’re looking for pithy, “Dick Heston Live From The Farm” stuff this week, I’ll see you on Monday. But stick with me even if you’re unwilling to tackle the book.
13 years ago, Drew and Roy wrote the quote above. It’s pretty prescient. The key words are “you must have the courage to speak up.” Seein’s how it appears we are whiffing badly as a society and a world at mitigating the negativity and softening the viciousness of this always connected, everybody has a channel time.
The We and Me Cycles have continued for most of history, and until He comes back and starts handing out tickets to Heaven, they may continue to continue. (That was some literary genius right there!)
Speaking up has always been the trait of Difference Makers, and never before have we been more in demand. Speak up for what we believe is right. Speak up against what we believe is wrong. Do both with respect and empathy and caring. At work. At home. Wherever we are.
And, for some pithy, Dick Heston Live From The Farm input, remember, Dad always said, “No matter where you go, there you are.” Hemingway (who wrote more than Dad did) said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” Let’s be here, now. And let’s listen completely. After we have taken a breath or two and thought things through, let’s approach whatever comes next with the courage to speak up.
It’s not about breaking the cycles. It’s about maximizing them.
