“Routine is God’s way of saving us between our times of inspiration.”
– Oswald Chambers, June 15th entry in My Utmost For His Highest, one of the top selling Daily Devotionals in history
“For where your treasures lie, there also lies your heart.”
– The Bible, Luke 22:34
Inspiration and treasure. Now those are easy topics to dwell on. “If we just close one more deal before the fiscal year ends, we’ll get more treasure. I must be inspired to win this deal…”
Routine and heart. More difficult topics, if focus is our goal.
It can’t always be a sprint. It can’t always be transactional, or transformational. If we don’t have a routine, and a heart for that routine, the inspiration and treasures we seek will be fewer and further between.
Sports analogy alert: The team that wins the national championship or the Super Bowl every year will have one of the best fundamentally sound teams, and will have executed on the routine matters of football. Perfect practice, repeated thousands of times, so that when the “big play” presents itself, they’re rested, in command and ready to soar.
So it is in our day-to-day. When we get the “little” things right, the “big” things kind of fall in to place.
