Dad: “Did you do your best?”
Me: “Yes.”
Dad: “Then you did all you could, and we’re proud of you.”
– A conversation behind the backstop, West Des Moines Dowling, circa 1979
My high school is back in the State Tournament in Iowa, for the first time since my old team made it in 1979. The first round game would prove to be the first I would ever lose in my high school career, and the loss stung.
An Iowa farmer of few words found the right ones that night, and as the Trojans roll in to the 8th (extra innings) in a pitcher’s-duel-both-teams-only-have-one-hit masterpiece, I have a few for them.
“Find a way to win. But do your best. And if it’s not enough, you’ll still remember tonight at least 35 years from tonight.”

Unfortunately the 2014 Trojans lost their first round game too…. but I also hope they hold their heads high and remember this great season 35 years from now too.

Wow, what a memory! That has probably been thought about quite a few times over the last 35 years. I am almost positive you have spoken to your son about this. That is such a great life lesson. Now it can be passed along. Thank you.
History does repeat itself. And I hope in 35 years I can read this again.
