“If you stay ready, you ain’t gotta get ready.”
– From a hand-written note sent by basketball coach Jerry Wainwright, one of nearly 500 he sends every week
Wainwright is featured in this story in today’s Wall Street Journal. For 30 years now, Wainwright, currently an assistant coach at Cal State – Fresno, has penned — hand written — nearly 40 notes each day, on average. They go to players, coaches, family of players, coaches — virtually everyone with whom Coach Wainwright has interacted over his career.
The article mentions that many reply with a text or e-mail.
Add that to the list of things that make me say, “Hmmmmmmmm?”
I try to send three hand-written notes per weekday. It’s served me well in my career, with employees, clients, friends, etc — but I am amazed by the sheer volume and consistency of Wainwright’s efforts — and reaffirmed by the impact the notes clearly make on the recipients.
Worth a try. Start with one each day, and see if it doesn’t make a difference. For them, and for you.
