“The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest of things without it.”
– Carl Jung (1875-1961)
“Meaning is not inherent in events; it is made by people.”
– Dave and Wendy Ulrich in their book, The Why of Work
Meaning is made. The Ulrich’s talk about true leaders as “meaning-makers.” Our term is “difference-makers.” And nothing is made without effort. Without focus. Without conscious consideration of the outcome.
I am reminded of an interaction I had with the shoeshine guy in Minneapolis almost two years ago. He brought meaning to his work. (Click the link to read about it!) I am reminded of my morning breakfast stops at Starbuck’s to get the egg-white wrap from “Mo.” She brings meaning to her work.
We don’t have to be brain-scientists or rocket-surgeons to bring meaning to our work. But unless we intentionally seek a meaningful outcome – and unless those to whom we look to for leadership intentionally create an environment where meaning can take root – we won’t have it, or be able to get it.
Let’s make meaning, while we’re making a difference.
