“Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.”
– Albert Einstein
Mastery, regardless of the field, is life changing. The devotion that goes in to it is borne out in the magic that comes out of it. When we devote our whole strength and soul, a difference will be made.
Recent examples of true, strength and soul-sapping mastery that will resonate with me for years:
1) It was a true blessing to be live at Lambeau Field Sunday to watch Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers almost single handedly win a football game (against a very formidable opponent) on only one good leg, and then hobble off to the chant of “M-V-P,” from the 80,000 faithful in attendance.
2) To be seated inside the Moody Theatre for the Foo Fighters recent Austin City Limits taping was to be in such close proximity to true mastery (in every sense of a musical performance), that we literally walked out physically and emotionally spent from receiving the band’s full strength and soul for nearly three hours.
3) The Christmas Eve service at Hill Country Bible Church. Production? Check! Engagement? Check! Impact? Check! Not just on the part of the pastor, but the entire staff and community. Wow. Yikes.
We’ve all seen a performance by or been exposed to someone — a teacher, a sales professional, a speaker, an athlete, a dancer, a doctor, a mechanic, a carpenter, an artist — who simply poured their whole strength and soul in to something in such a way that we walked away materially impacted.
What if we devoted our whole strength and soul to creating “summa that?”
