“We learn the hard way, all I need is one more day, to get it right again; If I didn’t know better, I’d know better then. Given time I’ll get it! Let me go around, let me go around, let me go around again.”
– Lyric from “Given Time” by the Rainmakers
Not many people outside Kansas City know this band, which is too bad. Since I first saw them in about 1982 (Wikipedia says Bob didn’t form the band until ’86, but they’re wrong…) at a dive bar in Kirksville, MO, with NMSU students lined up halfway around the block, their music has been a staple for me. Their front man, Bob Walkenhorst,is a really unique dude.
Walkenhorst is a story-teller, and all of his lyrics tell a story.
“Given Time” is the story of our desire for “do-overs,” and how we all want them, given time.
We don’t get them, though. Once time has passed, it’s passed. Of all the things that have happened prior to RIGHT….NOW…none of them are retractable.
What we do NEXT, though, is within our reach. We can’t go around again….but we can go forward.
And, it’s our chance to make a difference.

What was the bar in kirksville? Not that I would probably know it because I was studying all the time. I was the last graduating class at NMSU before they changed the name to Truman State

Great question! Any other subscribers remember the name, because I don’t! It was the place that hosted live music, behind the radio station at which I worked. The bar was about a block southwest of the square. I do not recall the name, and the 80’s in general may be to blame for the lapse… Any other Bulldog faithful recall the name?
