“If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn’t follow. I’d be there, at the bottom, to catch them.”
– Unattributed, but no doubt spoken by an Iowa Hawkeye football fan
Loyalty is an odd thing.
Once pledged, it’s hard to relinquish, no matter how painful it can be.
As college football season — my favorite time of year — kicks off, I find myself wanting to beat my noggin against the wall. Again.
But, as the middle of The Three (and even his little sister) and I settled in to watch an immensely disappointing opener to this 2013 season, it occurred to me that maybe 10 years from now, maybe 10 years from then, and maybe, just maybe, even beyond then, we’ll be able to settle in — together – and commiserate together, or celebrate, or somewhere in between.
But loyalty is about the “together” part.
And that makes a difference.
