“All I feel, clouds, surrounded by clouds
Yesterday’s anger is the sadness of today
Lives were filled with summer and laughter
Now are smiles are gray…”
– Lyric from “Life Before Insanity,” by Gov’t Mule
One, it’s a great song on a great album by a great band.
Two, it happens.
One the way home from the movie tonight (Spiderman 2 — pretty good, actually — and thanks for asking…) the Younger Two of The Three were, for whatever reason, asking me questions about growing up on the farm. It got me thinking — because even without the farm, growing up the way I did was pretty awesome — and pretty simple.
I miss the simplicity.
Maybe that’s why I try to focus so much energy on boiling down “complex” matters to their most basic elements. Maybe it’s because I’m not smart enough to deal with complexity — insanity, if you will.
Whatever the reason — when the clouds begin to surround us, and yesterday’s anger begins to turn to sadness, difference makers remember — and find, somehow, the summer and laughter.
