“I don’t even remember what I said. I hope whatever I said was cute and clever, and maybe even a tiny bit humorous. I hope it wasn’t mindless babble, and if it was, hopefully everyone will forget about it pretty quick.”
- Mike Leach (1961 – 2022), football coach, philosopher, comedian, historian, influencer in the old-school way
It’s not a sports metaphor. As Daron K. Roberts says at the top of each of his posts, “This is not about sports.“
It is, however, “silly season” in several sports. Hall of Fame Induction candidates, trophy finalists, the “College Football Money Grab Committee” (or is it the “playoff” committee?). Golf matches that are, well, money grabs. And all around this season, in sports, and as we approach the end of the year in business cycles, there can be lots of talk about who gets inducted, nominated, or memorialized. Whatever.
Mike Leach, was a college football coach. Mike Leach is not eligible for the College Football Coaches Hall of Fame because he didn’t win 60% of the games he coached. He won 59.6% of the games he coached. And then he suffered a fatal heart attack that left a football-field-wide gap in the lives of hundreds of young men. But he’s not eligible for the Hall of Fame. (Look for the post titled “Stupid By Any Measure” to come at some point). So, whether a Hall-of-Famer or not (by any measure), Mike Leach was a Difference-Maker, by any measure.
If you’re looking for a bit of levity, or a good dose of perspective, here’s one of dozens of links on Leach that will provide both.
For more than two decades, this blog, in its various forms, has been about making a difference and about the difference-makers themselves.
Mike Leach made a difference. Make it a great weekend.
