“Instinct is a marvelous thing. It can be neither explained nor ignored.”
– Agatha Christie, American author, in her novel The Mysterious Affair At Styles (c. 1916)
Singular. Instinct.
We talk a lot about instincts, plural, but the concept of instinct, singular, is a bit more magical for me.
When we think of instincts, plural, it waters down the magic of the singular, instinct.
A wolf instinctively hunts. A swallow or Canadian goose instinctively migrates. A difference maker instinctively goes to that place where differences are made. The part of the conversation just past where most people stop. The hand-written note rather than the e-mail or the text. The one last question that not only changes the context but that opens up possibilities for answers.
Our instinct, singular, is a marvelous thing, and since we can neither explain or ignore it — let’s commit to just trust it.
