“My daddy used to tell me don’t be fooled by what you see
If you want to get to the heart of things you gotta look way down deep
Second place don’t get it son a winner’s gotta come in first
There’s nothing worse than to take a drink that leaves you in the dirt
Dig, dig, dig a little deeper in the well boys dig a little deeper in the well
If you want a good cool drink of water you gotta dig a little deeper in the well”
– Lyric from “Dig A Little Deeper In The Well” by the Oak Ridge Boys
I’m probably one of few people that have Cake, Green Day, Hank and Hank, Jr., Black Sabbath, Led Zep, BB King, Ted Nugent, Weezer and the Oak Ridge Boys all on my iPod.
This lyric, though, just rings out loud and true for me. Especially now.
We can’t accept the status quo, and we have to look way down deep, especially when it comes to the motivation of people who want things from us.
There’s a story about a boy who comes in to the barber shop every day. The barber says, “Look, here comes the dumbest kid in town.” Every day, the barber offers the kids his choice between one dollar bill and two quarters. Every day, the kid takes the quarters. The barber laughs and laughs, thinking he’s taking advantage of the dumbest kid in town. One day, a guy stops the kid outside the shop. “Son,” he says, “why do you take the quarters every day?” “It’s simple,” the boy replied, “the day I take the dollar, the game is over.”
I actually grew up in a time when several of our neighbors had a coffee can on a rope that they dropped down in to the well to get water to drink. I remember Howard Biggs showing us how to get down in the water where it was cooler and sweeter. We had to learn how to get a better drink, and today we have to learn how to get deeper in the well at our clients.
Let’s stop offering the choice between a dollar bill and two quarters. Let’s start asking audacious questions that make them reach for their wallet and break out the tens, and the twenties and give us the choice on how much we take….in exchange for the good, cool water (value) we’ll deliver.
Dig a little deeper in the well, team. It makes it that much easier to make a difference each day.
