“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.”
– Simon Sinek (b. 1973), UK-born strategist, author and speaker, author of Start With Why
If we don’t have a “Why,” the people we expect to buy from us might still buy from us. Once.
Ultimately, our “Why” defines us. As businesses. As business people. As people.
If it’s just to make money, that’s empty. If it’s just to beat a competitor, that’s short-sighted.
If our “Why” speaks to a greater good — we’re on the way to something magnificent.
Now, that’s not to say that sometimes we shouldn’t take a job because it puts groceries on the table and a roof overhead. That’s not an ignoble “Why.” It does, however, leave room for other “Why’s,” that may well lead us back to connecting what we believe with how we spend our workaday lives.
What if, every morning, we jotted a note reminding us of our “Why?”
Maybe it’s a Faith thing. Maybe it’s a family thing. Maybe it’s like Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton and the rest of the band describe — ultimately, we’re gonna have to serve somebody.
PS — GREAT version of a great song. I hope you clicked on the link…
