“Courage undergirds every good thing.”
– The first sentence in Hugh Hewitt’s book, The Happiest Life, a gift from my friend, Peter Kujawa
The subtitle of the book is “Seven Gifts, Seven Givers & The Secret to Genuine Success,” but I don’t think there’s a “secret.” Like most of what we learn that carries any value, if we follow the ten basic rules that got sent down the mountain, and if we deploy common sense faithfully and Faith-fully, then genuine success seems the most likely outcome.
The Eldest of The Three is at an age where she and her peers are making choices about what they do and don’t do, who they do and don’t hang around with — and her common sense, thus far, seems to be guiding her well. But there will be tests, challenges and crossroads, and courage will undergird her in each case.
There may be a major business decision facing you. You may have a health issue — for you or a parent or a loved one — that requires a call, a decision. It might be as simple as deciding whether the Costco Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds or the goal to get down to 205 should take precedent over the other…
Courage, sometimes in small doses, sometimes in large, sometimes painted on a big canvas, sometimes just scratched on a little Post-It Note® stuck on the corner of your monitor — courage undergirds every good thing.
Having the courage to know what to do is simple, most often, but doing that thing can be most difficult, and carrying courage through to the execution will make a difference.
