“We could leave our strategic plan on an airplane, and it wouldn’t matter. It’s all about execution.”
– John Stumpf, CEO of Wells Fargo
It is, really, ALL about execution.
The bigger problem is, most companies — most executives — heck, most people in general don’t have to worry about leaving their strategic plan on an airplane. They don’t have one to leave.
This time of year, many companies are getting their first look at performance against budget, or month-over-month from prior year. Many companies are starting to “measure” their results.
For too many, it’s just a cursory glance in the rear-view mirror to see how the same ol’ road looks compared to the last time they made the same drive.
They think they’re executing, but without a plan, how will they know if the hard work is making a difference?
