“The last temptation is the greatest treason: to do the right thing for the wrong reason.”
- T. S. Eliot as cited by The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.“
I’ve wrestled with which of the nine directions I could go with this heavy set of topics, but the week’s theme is clarity.
“Do the right thing,” is a dangerous phrase, one I know first-hand since The Heston Group has long marketed itself as helping Clients do “The Right Thing, The Right Way, at The Right Time.” Pretty cocky, and under review.
As times have evolved, I’ve become more of a right thing guy. There’s rarely just one right thing (except for that heavy list of ten that Moses schlepped down off the mountain.
Clarity, then, would be especially important in determining our “Why?” so that we don’t face the choice Dr. King and Eliot refer to.
I’ll keep working on the Marketing presentation, but let’s think about a right thing, the right way at the right time, to keep clarity and help us restrict biases.
