“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.”
– Andre Gide, French novelist
It just stands to reason that if we want to get to new places, we have to take different routes. With our relationships. With our businesses. With our hobbies. If we seek a different destination, we have to get in to discoverer mode, and that means leaving our comfort mindset back in port.
I sorta dig the nautical analogy. Losing sight of the shore is a great word picture to keep in mind as we continue down the path of “changing the conversation.”
We don’t have to sail off willy-nilly every day in every aspect of our routine, mind you. Routine can be good. Repetitiveness can be good. Consistency is often a good thing. Still, if our goal is to find a better way — or even if our goal is to validate that the way we’ve been going is the better way, we’ll need to explore different ways, and that means losing sight of the shore, at least for a little while.
Said differently, if you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes.
Get away from the shore. Discover new lands. Make a difference.
