“I guess my feet know where they want me to go, walking on a country road.”
– Lyric to James Taylor’s “Country Road”
Yesterday afternoon, on American Airlines flight #3386 from Cedar Rapids to Dallas, our path took me directly over my hometown and the farm on which I grew up.
I recently sold my half interest in that farm — a decision that was right in every aspect of asset management, but one that still tugs at my heart, and looking down upon the land, the baseball diamond, Cedar Creek and my sister’s place just up the road, I was compelled to wax nostalgic. Those were my roots down there, and I craned my neck until we had flown too far for me to look back anymore.
And then it occurred to me. We’ve always flown too far to look back, unless it is to glean a lesson from the path we’ve walked previously.
Our instincts, informed by our experiences and our roots, will know where they want us to go. We ought to fight them less, and let them lead us more.
April and October are “Lyric Months” for the DD — here’s hoping you enjoy the musical journey…
