“It’s different when it’s for your team. For your country. There’s nothing like it.”
– Morgan Pressel, age 28, LPGA star, on what it’s like to have a 12-foot putt for a tournament win, or a Solheim Cup win
Tuesday night, I had the honor of attending a sponsor’s event for the 2017 Solheim Cup. During the Q & A, the question was asked, “Which is more difficult; a 12-foot putt to win $200,000 or a 12-foot putt to win $0 and a Solheim Cup point?”
The essence of a team is in the answer.
“There’s nothing like it.”
We all want to win. We all want to be the best. And when we win together, we grow, together. There really is something different about being “in it” as a unit, a team. The shared devotion, commitment and passion for each other’s success is transcendent, and difference making.
Today, we’ll be faced with choices. Win for me, win for us. Put in the extra practice, the extra phone call, the extra prep time or extra investment in lifting up a struggling teammate. When we invest in “me” stuff, it’s beneficial. When we invest in “we” stuff, it’s exponential.
“It’s different when it’s for your team,” young Morgan said. And across the stage, Juli Inkster, Pat Hurst, Wendy Ward (we got to have dinner with Wendy!), Brittany Lincicome and the legendary Nancy Lopez all nodded. They’ve been there, done that. They know there’s nothing like it.
So do we, when we get it right.
